Your Minnesota Gophers are currently 11-2 on the season and ranked #9 in the nation. The Big10 home opener is this Friday night versus Michigan State, followed by Michigan on Saturday night (see match previews below).
See you in the stands!
In this
issue
From
Coach Hebert (9/19/05):
No one knew what to think in early August. After all, the Gophers welcomed 16 players to fall camp and 8
of them were new to the program. It is no wonder that a sense of uncertainty
surrounded the team as it took the court for the pre-conference portion of the
schedule.
Now, after going 10-1, the Gophers have given notice that they will be competitive at the top level in 2005. The near victory over Nebraska, the fabulous road win at Kansas State, and the comeback win over TCU (yes TCU...they tore us up in game one!!) are signs that Minnesota Volleyball is poised for another run at going deep into the NCAA Tournament.
One new feature of this year’s team is the development of our middle attack. Both Meredith Nelson and Jessy Jones are at or near the top among Big Ten middle hitters in terms of hitting efficiency. Kelly Bowman and freshman Rachel Hartmann have learned to “dish” the quick attack with more confidence than ever.
The competition for playing time on the left side is heating up. Outsiders may be surprised that Marci Peniata, our wonderfully talented defensive specialist, has earned a starting spot on the left side. Yes, she is not as tall as the others and can be a blocking liability. But what she provides in other areas of the game is invaluable. She is a terrific shot maker as a hitter, she is passing, serving and defending at an elite level, and her court generalship is second to none on the team. She is a very, very good volleyball player. Sarah Florian, Meghan Cumpston, Kyla Roehrig, and Katie Vatterrodt are all capable left side hitters and all will contribute this season.
The 6-2 system has been maintained, but in a modified form. Hartmann goes through the back row as a setter and is replaced in the front row by Jess Byrnes. Bowman, the other setter, stays in the front row to attack. We have occasionally left one of the setters in the front row to run a 5-1. It is nice to have that flexibility.
Our biggest challenge will be to become familiar enough with each other on and off the court so that we can learn to trust each other and rely on each other in tough situations. With so many new faces this will take time. But I am very impressed with the team’s collective attitude so far and I have no doubt that this team will percolate very nicely.
Brace yourself. This will be one tough Big Ten race. No match is a gimmee.
I will see you all at the Pavilion this weekend!

(9/19/05):
Hello
Golddiggers!
It’s
mid-September already! This year’s edition of Gopher
volleyball is off to a great 10-1 start and three tournament victories at our
own Diet Coke Classic, and tournaments at Kansas State and TCU. We
hope that you were able to attend some or all of the home matches in person
during the Diet Coke Classic, vs. #1 Nebraska on Labor Day, or at the “Border
Battle” on the neutral court down in Rochester, Minnesota vs. UNI.
The Gophers really tested Nebraska
here at home in a 5-game thriller!
Now
it’s time for the next phase of the fall volleyball campaign to begin --
the always-tough Big Ten conference portion of the season.
We hope that we and the team can continue to count on your
great support and your home attendance.
Look
for information on this fall’s coaches’ “Chalk Talks” and our post-match
receptions elsewhere in this newsletter. We will also have your booster
club membership packets ready for you to pick up during the next home weekend
of September 30th/October 1st, including the 2005 UM volleyball media guide and
the 2004 season highlight DVD. Remember that your membership
benefits vary slightly according to your paid membership level.

are lots of new player faces and new names to learn quickly. Be sure
to invite your friends to come out to the UM Sports Pavilion, and support your
Golden Gopher volleyball team -- it’s
STILL the best ticket and entertainment in town! Thanks again for your
support and membership!

Golddiggers apparel is now available. Orders that have already been taken should be filled and waiting at the first Big10 home weekend, 9/30-10/1. Information will be available at the reception if you have not seen the flyer.
Booster club membership packets will be distributed at the Saturday 10/1 reception, following the Michigan match (and before both matches). It will save mailing costs if members would pick them up, so we encourage you to do so.
The Golddiggers are also involved with producing a photo-banner for the 2005 Gophers squad. Watch for details about 8x14 photos available for sale.
Dave Boos and Jill Pearson will be coordinating Chalk Talks again this year. This is an analysis of the evening’s match and takes place just before the team’s warmup. They will be held before the Michigan match (10/1), the Penn State match (10/22), the Wisconsin match (11/12), and the Purdue match (11/26). The location is generally the Media room off the south concourse of the Pavilion, beginning at 5:30pm.
Saturday, October 29th is this year’s Williams Arena match (v. Indiana). John Thompson from the Golddiggers Board, requests that you “invite your friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, enemies, and strangers on the street.” It’s good advice.

FRI 9/30 7pm -- Michigan State
The Spartans are 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big10, having lost in 5 to Michigan last Wednesday, and beaten Indiana in 4 this past weekend. MSU, picked to finish 9th in the conference, has been very competitive so far this year, Cathy George’s first as head coach. They have beaten a solid Wichita State team, and taken both Sacramento State and #6 Louisville to 5th games. They are currently ranked a very respectable 42nd in Pablo (see Rankings below), out of 300+ DI schools.
They are led by Megan Wallin (154 kills), Ashley Schatzle (124 kills), and Katie Johnson (273 kills). The 273 kills by Johnson more than doubles Minnesota’s leader in that category. Johnson also has 156 hitting errors, which in all honesty, is a prodigious number. By comparison, the most by a Minnesota hitter is 42. The Spartans’ setter is Mickey Davis, averaging 13.21 assists per game. Their libero, Nicole Colaluca (sophomore transfer from St. John’s), is averaging 5.30 digs per game.

SAT 10/1 7pm -- Michigan
The Wolverines are 7-4 overall and also 1-1 in the Big10. Michigan beat MSU in 5, then lost to Indiana in 5, both matches on the road. They started off the season 0-3 (losses to Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Long Beach State), but had won 7 straight prior to the loss to the Hoosiers. Pablo places them at #39 this week.
The other U of M has three hitters with more than 100 kills on the year: Katie Bruzdzinski (169), Danielle Pflum (130), and Lyndsay Miller (126). Mara Martin, a redshirt freshman, is their setter, averaging 12.37 assists per game. Stesha Selsky, libero, is averaging 5.05 digs per game.
I just love to spell that name: Bruzdzinski. (Enough to type it one more time.)

WED 10/5 7pm -- Iowa
The Hawkeyes are 10-4 on the season, also 1-1 in the Big10. Last weekend, they defeated Northwestern in 3 games, but were swept by Wisconsin. They play Northern Iowa Tuesday night, and, like the Gophers, play Michigan and Michigan State this weekend. Pablo ranks them #92. Their Big10 matches were their first against opponents with Pablo rankings better than #130.
Iowa has two ex-teammates of Gophers’ frosh setter Rachel Hartmann -- Catherine Smale from her high school (Rosary) and Kiley Fister from her JO team (Club Fusion). Iowa is led, offensively, by Stacy Vitali (.309, 173 kills) and Smale (188 kills). Fister is their setter, averaging 10.65 assists per game.

Road matches
The Gophers are then back on the road, with matches against Indiana (10/7), Purdue (10/14), and Illinois (10/15). Bon voyage and best of luck!
I think it was Jacques Berra who said, “This is like deja vu all over again.”
The Gophers return home from a tough 5-game loss at Madison to the Badgers for the second straight year. And, like last year, it’s a loss that’s particularly hard to swallow given how the match was very much theirs to win. Up 1-0 (30-19 in the first game) and 2-1, the Gophers were unable to put away the pesky Badgers and lost 15-12 in the 5th. Although it’s hard to pinpoint the exact turning point in the match, it may have come in the 3rd game. The Gophers were ahead 24-12 and Wisconsin battled back to close to within 30-27 at the end.
This was the first Big10 road match for the freshmen and the two transfers, Sarah Florian and Meghan Cumpston. Game scores were 30-19, 27-30, 30-27, 24-30, 12-15.
On the bright side, the Gophers bounced back on Saturday night, sweeping the Northwestern Wildcats 30-20, 30-26 and 30-22.
It’s been an exciting season so far and it promises to get better and better as we head into Fall. The Gophers are currently 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big10. They have fought the #1 Huskers to 12-15 in the 5th, defeated #16 Kansas State at Manhattan, and swept border rival Northern Iowa at Rochester.
The Minnesota middles, Jessy Jones and Meredith Nelson, are hitting .345 and .335, respectively, and are each averaging over 1.1 blocks per game. Paula Gentil is again averaging well over 5 digs per game, and Malama Peniata continues to do it all. A solid corps of outside hitters are available for setters Kelly Bowman and Rachel Hartmann. It’s obvious that the staff is still tweaking the lineup, another reason to be optimistic about the team’s chances in the Big10 and beyond.
But, next year, howzabout a win in Madison? Let’s hear Jacques say something like “We didn’t make the wrong mistake this time.” Or “When you come to that fork in the road, take it.”
Or we could just ask him to pipe down.
Go Gophers!
We sent the freshmen the following Q&A (and we thank them for taking the time to respond).
1. What was the single biggest factor in your decision to
attend the University of Minnesota?
Kelly Fallon: I wanted to attend the U mostly because of the team chemistry with each other and the coaches.
Kelly Schmidt: I really liked the great weather here.
Michele Wilber: Playing volleyball as a Gopher.
Kyla Roehrig: The atmosphere.
Katie Vatterrodt: There are always a lot of factors that go into making a big decision. The few things that made the U stick out were the campus so close to the city, the girls on the team, the coaching staff, and knowing I could reach my potential here.
Rachel Hartmann: The people -- coaches, players, etc.
2. What is it you most like about volleyball?
KF: It’s a team sport at which you need so many different skills that you have to put all together.
KS: Blocking an arrogant player.
MW: Digging the best player on the other team.
KR: Hitting the ball.
KV: I love the long rallies during a game. The teams are so close; there are a few great digs and great swings on both sides. Someone always has to win and the crowd always goes wild. It’s a great feeling to work and win those kind of rallies.
RH: Competing, winning, traveling.
3. What is it you least like about volleyball?
KF: The spandex.
KS: Double days.
MW: Shagging balls after drills.
KR: Sprawling.
KV: It’s hard to play when the other team is on a run of points and it feels like there is no way to get a sideout.
RH: I like everything about it!
4. If you could be one of your teammates, who would you
be and why?
KF: I would like to be Kelly Bowman because I admire her leadership skills and the way she can shake off a mistake.
KS: Michele Wilber. So I could see what it’s like to look up to people.
MW: Schmidty, so I could see how it is to look down on people.
KR: Meredith, because she looks out for me.
KV: I would be Marci Peinata. She is so fun and happy all the time, but when the game starts she is focused and wants to win more than anyone. Her skill/technique is one of the best on the team, and she can get a kill on anyone, no matter their size.
RH: Kelly Bowman. She is an all-around player, she can do pretty much anything. She is also a team player and a good leader.
5. What is your favorite work of fiction?
KF: That has to be The Notebook.
KS: Star Wars.
MW: The Great Gatsby.
KR: Dr. Suess’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go.
KV: I love all of the books by Janet Evanovich. It’s a series of mysteries, but every time I read one of them I laugh out loud because her characters and the problems they get themselves into are so funny.
RH: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella.
6. What is your favorite movie of all-time?
KF: Would have to be any comedy
KS: I love too many to answer that. I guess it depends on what mood I’m in.
MW: Anchorman.
KR: I love the movies on Lifetime -- don’t have one favorite.
KV: Sleepless in Seattle.
RH: The Notebook and Old School.
7. What sport do you most like to play (besides
volleyball)?
KF: I like to play soccer.
KS: Tennis ... I’m worthless though.
MW: Softball.
KR: Basketball.
KV: Soccer or skiing.
RH: Basketball.
8. What is your least favorite food?
KF: Eggs.
KS: Beans.
MW: Mexican (except for Taco Bell -- love it).
KR: Seafood.
KV: I can’t stand salmon; it tastes terrible to me.
9. If “Hollywood” were to make Mike Hebert: The Movie,
who do you think should be cast in the title role?
KF: Kurt Russell.
KS: Robin Williams. He is intelligent and witty ... I don’t know if they look much alike though.
MW: Kurt Russell.
KR: Rodney Dangerfield.
KV: I think Jim Carey would make a good Mike Hebert. He would be able to have Mike’s sense of humor, but could also be serious when it came to game time.
RH: Robin Williams. They don’t look alike, but they are both really funny and have a good sense of humor.
10. True or False: Ski-U-Mah is in the Rouser solely
because it rhymes with Minnesota and “Rah”.*
KF: False because I found out why it is, but I really did think that was the only reason. It’s logical to me.
KS: False.
MW: False.
KR: Haha. True.
KV: Definitely false.
RH: False.
*For the record, this last question is both true and false, so there was no correct/incorrect response, although we’re not so sure about Rodney Dangerfield. ;)

The CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll was released 9/26/2005. The link to the complete rankings follows, but the top 10 were: 1--Nebraska, 2--Washington, 3--Stanford, 4--Penn State, 5--Florida, 6--Louisville, 7--Missouri, 8--Wisconsin, 9--Minnesota, 10--Notre Dame. In addition, Ohio State is #18 and Purdue is #21.
http://www.avca.org/collegiate/dipoll/dipoll9-26-05.asp
Two other rankings of note come from the RichKern.com site, the first creatively named the RichKern.com Volleyball Poll. This is a poll compiled from rankings by fans around the country. The Gophers are #7 in this poll.
The second is the Pablo ranking system, based on an algorithm developed by a fan of the sport, and it is based solely on match results. You can read more about it in the FAQ at the RichKern.com site. The actual rankings link and the FAQ link are below. If nothing else, it’s an interesting alternative to the polls. The Gophers are ranked #7 here, as well.
http://www.richkern.com/vb/rankings/PabloFAQ.asp
The season is well under way, with most conferences having commenced interleague play this past weekend. Nebraska and Washington remain #1 and #2 in the latest poll, with Stanford and Penn State creeping up, slowly, behind them. Strictly in terms of top-fifteen clubs, there have been a few surprise teams so far -- Notre Dame, San Diego, and Missouri for three -- and some disappointments -- Tennessee, USC, UCSB, and Texas for four.
For statistical leaders, check out the following link (updates are slow, but do come):
http://www.ncaasports.com/volleyball/womens/stats/stats
Here’s a quick trip around the top-fifteen (excluding Big10 teams).
Nebraska
The Huskers have thrashed their way to an 11-0 record and the #1 ranking in the CSTV/AVCA poll. On the way, they have beaten #3 Stanford, #4 Penn State, #9 Minnesota, #11 Hawai’i, #18 Ohio State, and #23 Texas A&M. All of those wins were also sweeps, with the lone exception of our Gophers, who made them work overtime, taking them to a 5th game on Labor Day.
The Huskers are hitting .322 as a team, with all starters hitting over .300. Melissa Elmer at .416 and Sarah Pavan at .358 are the top percentages. They are also averaging 4.35 blocks per game as a team.
Washington
The Huskies have had a relatively easy schedule, certainly when compared to Nebraska’s. Their wins in Hawai’i (both sweeps) were their first matches against an opponent with a Pablo rank higher than #82. They are, nonetheless, 10-0 and the consensus #2 team in the nation.
Their statistics, helped by the softer schedule, are mind-boggling. They are hitting .422 as a team. Sanja Tomasevic is hitting .436, Cristal Morrison .400, and Brie Hagerty .347. Their middles are both hitting over .500.
Stanford
The Cardinal may very well be, by season’s end if not already, a better team than the 2004 National Champions. They stand at 13-1 after sweeping USC and UCLA to open Pac10 play. The remarkable part of this is that they are doing this with two freshmen starting, although since these freshmen are Foluke Akinradewo (.399) and Cynthia Barboza (.326) it’s not that surprising.
Florida
The Gators are 12-1, their only loss coming to Notre Dame. There appears to be some solid opposition in the SEC this year, with Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, and Alabama, but Florida seems likely to re-establish their dominance.
Louisville
The Cardinal have moved to a #6 ranking in spite of a schedule that has featured only one top-25 team. Louisville looks to stay in the top ten, too, with matches against Tennessee and Notre Dame being the only top-25 teams on their remaining schedule. All that being said, this is a strong squad, with a distinct international flavor: two players from Russia and one each from Latvia, Slovakia, Ukraine, and China. They also feature seven players at 6’3” or taller, including Jana Matiasovska who is at 6’6”.
Missouri
One of the other surprise teams of 2005, the Tigers are 10-0, including a sweep of Wisconsin at Montana State’s tournament. Na Yang, from Shan Dong China, a 6’3” outside hitter, is hitting .335. She is ably supported by the likes of Jessica Vander Kooi (.311), Nicole Wilson (.439), and Lisa Boyd (.380). The big question is whether or not they will be able to challenge Nebraska in the Big12. Their first meeting is October 5th.
Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish, now 8-1, scrapped their way into the top ten with wins over Texas, USC, and Florida, all within the space of a week. A subsequent loss to LSU took some of the luster off that accomplishment, but Notre Dame remains #10 in this week’s poll. They are led by their perennial blocking machine Lauren Brewster.
Hawai’i
The Rainbow Wahine are 7-6, but 5 of those losses are to top four teams. Last weekend’s split with LMU, however was unexpected. Still, they have wins over USC and UCLA, so it’s hard to gauge just where exactly Hawai’i fits into the top-20. The poll has them at #11.
San Diego
The Toreros, 10-1, have wins over UCLA, California and LBSU, and a #12 ranking. They appear to be the favorite in the West Coast Conference. Laurel Abrahamson, from Bloomington Jefferson, is one of their starters.
Arizona
The jury is still out on the Wildcats. They are now 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac10 (wins over Oregon and Oregon State), but they are yet to be tested. Could this finally be the year 2002’s best recruiting class reaches its potential?
California
The Golden Bears, 9-2, defeated USC and UCLA this past weekend to go to 2-0 in the Pac10. Think this was a small accomplishment? Cal was 0-47 against the Bruins heading into last Friday’s match. If you have a chance to watch this team on TV, tune in to watch 5’8” outside hitter Angie Pressey.
Santa Clara
The Broncos could be San Diego’s main competition in the West Coast Conference, although Pepperdine, St. Mary’s, LMU, and San Francisco will also be formidable. Santa Clara is 10-1, including a win over Arizona. Their only loss was to Utah.
First of all, the standings, where, after the first weekend of play, only two teams are undefeated (we dispense with alphabetical order for the Gophers):
| Penn State | 2-0 |
| Wisconsin | 2-0 |
| Minnesota | 1-1 |
| Illinois | 1-1 |
| Indiana | 1-1 |
| Iowa | 1-1 |
| Michigan | 1-1 |
| Michigan State | 1-1 |
| Ohio State | 1-1 |
| Northwestern | 0-2 |
| Purdue | 0-2 |
Illinois
The Fighting Illini, after beating Ohio State at Columbus, are 1-1 in the Big10 and 10-3 overall. Their Pablo ranking is #50. Rachel VanMeter, with 280 kills and a .273 hitting percentage, is their go-to player, but Vicki Brown (.362), Meghan Macdonald (.324), and Kayani Turner (.258) all have 100+ kills, and the team is hitting a healthy .274. Stephanie Obermeier is once again setting for the Illini. The Buckeye win was their first this year over a ranked opponent, with losses to Louisville and Penn State their other results against the top-25.
http://fightingillini.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/ill-w-volley-body.html
Indiana
The Hoosiers have been struggling. They are 7-6 overall, but 1-1 in the Big10 after beating Michigan, at home, this past weekend. Their Pablo ranking is #100, primarily due to losses to Oklahoma, Winthrop, and Western Michigan. The Michigan win is, by far, their best win of the year. This is a very young team, with two freshmen and two sophomores seeing significant playing time, and TEN freshmen on their roster. Erica Short (192 kills) and Laura Holm (11.63 assists per game) are the starting freshmen.

Northwestern
The Wildcats were off to their best start in years, before being swept at home last weekend by Iowa and the Gophers. They are now 9-3 on the season, with a Pablo ranking of #60. Lauren Greenwood and Stephanie Jurivich have been splitting the setting duties, and Cassie McLaughlin (.355) and Lindsay Anderson (148 kills) have been their offensive leaders.
http://nusports.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/nw-w-volley-body.html
Ohio State
The Buckeyes have been something of a disappointment so far this year. They are 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference, but they have gone to 5 games with Bowling Green and Cleveland State, and lost to BYU and Illinois. They did defeat #25 Long Beach State and their Pablo ranking is #34. The loss of Briana McCarthy to a season-ending injury has not helped matters. The potential -- with players like Danielle Meyers (233 kills, .329), Ami Stevens (.282), and Marisa Main (12.42 assists per game) -- is definitely still there. The Penn State match, this Wednesday in Columbus, is an important one for the Buckeyes.
http://ohiostatebuckeyes.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/osu-w-volley-body.html
Penn State
The Nittany Lions have played their most difficult pre-season schedule in years, and have come through it with the #4 national ranking, an 11-2 record, and a Pablo ranking of #5. Wins over Hawai’i (twice), USC and Pepperdine have impressed the voters, as well as a 5-game loss to #3 Stanford. The Lions also were swept in Lincoln by Nebraska. This past weekend, they defeated Illinois in 3 and Purdue in 5, at home. Freshman Nicole Fawcett was subsequently named Big10 Player of the Week. PSU is now starting 3 freshmen: Fawcett, Laura Holloway and Christa Harmotto. Top it all off with the senior leadership of Sam Tortorello and Kaleena Walters and you have the conference favorite.
http://www.gopsusports.com/VolleyballW/home.cfm
Purdue
The Boilermakers have opened eyes around the country. They were unranked heading into the season and now sit at #21 with an 11-2 record and a #12 Pablo ranking (#4 the week before). Purdue did stumble in Columbus last Friday, but they had PSU on the ropes on Saturday, leading 1-0 and 2-1, before losing in 5. This is not a team to be overlooked, and the Gophers head to West Lafayette in two weeks. Renata Dargan, perhaps the most offensive setter in the country (.446 and 13.53 assists per game) leads the Boilermakers, with Elizabeth Jacques (.395), Samantha Mader (.378), and Stephanie Lynch (.305) being the primary beneficiaries of her setting.
http://purduesports.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/pur-w-volley-body.html
Wisconsin
Those pesky Badgers. The less said the better. 10-2 overall, 2-0 in the Big10, #6 Pablo. That’s it. I’m still trying to put it all behind me.
http://www.uwbadgers.com/sport_news/vb/headlines/index.aspx
Former Gopher setter Lindsey Berg was the starting setter for the USA National Team that recently won the 2005 NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship in Trinidad & Tobago. A 5-game win over perennial power Cuba, to whom they had lost in pool play, brought home the gold. Lindsey was also named the tournament’s “Best Setter.”
